Fakenham Town Band

1st Baritone - Mark Hays

Mark began playing cornet in 1976, and is another band member from 'ooop north', having been born and raised in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire where brass bands are very popular.

Mark began his banding career with Clipstone Colliery Brass Band and comes from a family with a long history of banding, with his grandfather and great uncle being founding members of Clipstone in 1929, as well as his father, uncle, two sisters, and his wife Trish also being members of the band. Mark has also played with a youth band, and had the opportunity to tour Germany and Holland and performed many concerts through the summer months.

Mark moved onto 1st baritone in 1986 and quickly progressed onto solo euphonium where he stayed until the band folded in 1995. After this, he moved to Pleasley Colliery Band, playing Eb bass for a year.

In 2001, Mark and his family moved to Norfolk, and after a 20 year break in banding decided to give it a go again, and joined Fakenham in early 2016.

Mark says that his favourite type of music is rock, pop and marches. He likes the friendly atmosphere and opportunity to create music at Fakenham. Mark's most memorable time in banding was the first contest he ever played in (in 1981), where the band won the 4th section - a proud achievement.
